Primary had another wonderful book club this week! We read Heartwood Hotel and loved this sweet story about finding a home and standing up for yourself and others.
Marvelously Made Book Club
Book club started as a way to connect and build relationships over a good book. It is important for parents to continue to read to their children even after they are reading themselves. So, in our book club, parents read the book aloud to their child at home and then we gather to discuss it and extend the book through various activities.
Heartwood Hotel
The children created hotel rooms for the characters in the story.
Creating with loose parts allows each child’s creation to be unique. “Tell me about it.” allows you to hear their thinking about how they came up with their design and connections that they made to the story.
They also made bird feeders to hang in their tree.
We had a wonderful discussion of all our favorite parts and the feelings we felt as these woodland characters took care of each other. We left excited to read the second book.
Story Tokens
A story token is something that we occasionally gift to the children after a meaningful book. A story token is simply a small object that represents the story in some way, reminds the children of the story, and encourages them to share about the story with someone else. The story token for Heartbreak Hotel was a special key.
