The Surprise Gourd Patch

The surprise gourd patch in the Primary Outdoor Classroom (1st-3rd grade), sprouted over the summer from seeds that had been buried last Fall.

Over the summer we decided to leave it, and see what would happen. This surprise has led to many deep and meaningful conversations as we observe the patch.

This patch has not only provided the experience of watching the vines grow and gourds produce. It has also become a home to so many insects and spiders that we can learn from.

One of the many fascinating observations we have discovered is watching the bees come to pollinate. The bees fly from bloom to bloom collecting pollen to take with them. The bees have been covered head to toe in pollen.

Some students spend most of their outdoor time watching, wondering, and asking questions.
