5 of Our Favorite Chapter Books to Read Aloud to Children

“Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.” – Emilie Buchwald

Even as your child learns to read, it is still incredibly important to continue to read aloud to them. We are often asked which chapter books parents should explore first. Here are five of our favorite chapter books that the WHOLE family will enjoy.

My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett

This book takes children on an adventure as the main character rescues a dragon. We love that the chapters in this book are shorter, which is a great fit for younger children just beginning to explore chapter books. It includes a black and white picture every few pages which allows children the opportunity to visualize the story.

Mercy Watson to the Rescue by Kate DiCamillo

Children will find delight in Mercy the Pig’s mischievous ways. This book is a good bridge between picture books and chapter books because of the bright, colorful illustrations, short chapters, and larger text on each page.

Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren

Pippi is a quirky and loveable character to go on adventures with. Children will laugh at her playful and unpredictable ways. This book includes a few black and white pictures.

Stuart Little by E.B. White

This book takes you on journey with a mouse named Stuart who lives with his human family. The few pictures in the book are black and white which helps children learn to envision the details of the story.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Florence and Richard Atwater

Mr. Popper and his group of penguins are entertaining in this book and the ending is surprising.

These books will become your family favorites. Which one are you going to start with?
